Is Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) Compulsory?

No. The law simply requires an employer to ensure that their electrical equipment is maintained in order to prevent danger. It does not say how this should be done or how often. Employers should take a risk-based approach, considering the type of equipment and what it is being used for. If it is used regularly and moved a lot e.g. a floor cleaner or a kettle, testing (along with visual checks) can be an important part of an effective maintenance regime giving employers confidence that they are doing what is necessary to help them meet their legal duties. UK Test can provide guidance on how to maintain equipment including Test Frequencies and Risk Assesment with a free Site Audit.

Why Have Regular PAT Testing?

Legislation

Health & Safety regulations and the Electricity Act Work Act 1989 as well as more recent legislation; The Management Of Health & Safety At Work Regulations 1999 and The Provision And Use Of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), all emphasise that business are responsible for the safety of their portable electrical appliances.

Insurance

If a fire can be attributed to a faulty electrical appliance, your insurance policy is likely to be invalid.

Fire

Businesses require in date PAT testing on all portable electrical appliances to obtain a fire safety certificate.

Professional Image

Failing to PAT test your electrical appliances makes your work place unsafe for staff and customers and so risks your professional image. It’s a false economy to operate without in date PAT testing as the Health & Safety Executive reports that 25% of reported electrical accidents involve portable appliances and every year around 1000 work place accidents involve electric shocks or burns. PAT testing could save a life.

What Does PAT Testing Involve?

UK Test is Safe Contractor accredited and all our PAT testing is carried out according to Institute Of Engineering & Technology (IET) strict guidelines by City & Guilds (2377-22 Certificate For The In Service inspection & Testing of Electrical Equipment) qualified engineers for your peace of mind. They will carry out electrical testing discretely and efficiently at your premises to minimise disruption. We use the latest, industry leading Seaward 250 PAT testing equipment.

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) checks:

  • The flex / cable to ensure no damage or bare wire is evident.
  • The plug to ensure it is secure and correctly wired to BS 1363 Standards.
  • The fuse to ensure correct rating and that it is free from signs of overheating and to BS 1362 Standards.
  • The appliance to ensure it is in good working order, switches on and off properly and that the casing has no damage that could permit access to live parts.
  • Using proven and calibrated test equipment our engineers then perform the required electrical tests on each appliance.
  • Each appliance is uniquely numbered and a label applied detailing this identification number. Numbering is vital to enable a Health and Safety Inspector to match test data to the individual appliance.
  • All test data is recorded and held on our data base. A copy will be sent to you which doubles up as an asset register.

Unlike many of our competitors, UK Test’s engineers will undertake minor repairs to plugs and cables, and replace fuses to the correct fuse size. For your convenience, our services can extend to full repair and re-cabling of more severely damaged appliances.

How often is PAT testing required?

The level and frequency of PAT testing varies according to the type of appliance, nature of its use, environment in which it is operated and the risk of it becoming faulty. Any damaged electrical equipment must be repaired and re PAT tested before further use.
